How to disable Smart Charging for Surface

Hello,

I have a surface pro 9 and I notice smart charging is on. I found ways to turn it off for a while but it would automatically turn it back on after a charge.

Problem right now is that I need to use it for 4 hours at a time, with no charging during it. I already turned on energy saving mode, turned down the brightness, have everything I need in dark mode and the battery still cannot last for the entire event with 80% charge. This is the majority of my use case for me, so I will need a way to turn off smart charging so the laptop will be usable for me. I understand that this is implemented to extend the battery's life, but I would really hope this is done in a way that does not undermine users' agency when it comes to configuring their machine.

Hi there, kibi! This is Marc. Thank you for reaching out!

At this time, Smart Charging cannot be permanently disabled through built-in settings, and it may re-enable itself automatically based on system behavior and telemetry. That said, you can try opening the Surface app (preinstalled or available in the Microsoft Store) and look for a Smart Charging section. If available, you may see an option to "Pause Smart Charging," which temporarily allows the device to charge to 100%. Keep in mind this is typically time-limited and will revert after charging or restarting.

Additionally, the system may gradually adapt if you regularly use the battery below 80% and avoid staying plugged in for extended periods. If this feature continues to interfere with your usage, I highly recommend sharing your feedback with Microsoft via the Feedback Hub app (press Windows + F) to request more user control over Smart Charging behavior.

Let me know if this solution works for you.

    Best regards,
