Removing a "Connected to Windows" account from Edge

I have an issue on a server that when I use Edge, it always prompts me to use a specific account with Microsoft services like seen below:

User's image

The account it displays me belongs to a test environment that I will only use very rarely, so I want to get red of its sign-in. As long as the above sign-in is active in Edge, it keeps prompting me to select an account at least 20 times a day when using Microsoft services.

I tried the following solutions:

  • "Restore settings to their default values" in Edge
  • Resetting sync data from Edge
  • Reinstalling Edge
  • Deleting the entire Windows user profile and re-creating it

AI suggests that I go to Settings -> Accounts -> Access Work or School but that doesn't exist on servers. It also suggests to use Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage Credentials but that one is already empty after deleting my profile. It also suggests to use the "Forget Account" on the sign in options but that option is in the kebab menu which is not available on this account (see screenshot). It also suggests to go to "edge://settings/profiles" and sign out there, but that account isn't signed in there. I

How can I get rid of this account?

Dear Maralok,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A.

You've done an excellent job of troubleshooting already. The key to solving this lies in the phrase "Connected to Windows". This tells us the account isn't just a saved browser credential; it's registered with the operating system itself. Since you're on a server, the usual "Access work or school" GUI is not available.

You could try following these steps below:

  1. Use dsregcmd to disconnect the account:
    • Press Windows + X, select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin)
    • Run this command:
           dsregcmd /status

    • Look at the output. You are specifically interested in the AzureAdJoined and WorkplaceJoined states under the "Device State" section. It's highly likely one of these will be YES. You might also see the problematic account email (ad***) listed under "User State" or "SSO State".
    • If the device is joined, you can force it to leave the domain. This will remove the "Connected to Windows" account. Run the following command:
           dsregcmd /leave

    • Reboot the server after running the command.
  2. Try to launch the Settings page via a URL:
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type ms-settings:workplace and press Enter.
    • If a window opens, it might be the hidden "Access work or school" page. Look for the ad*** account, select it, and click Disconnect.

I wish this could help. Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your cooperation.
