GIF playback in Teams is a broken, unacceptable embarrassment. When will this be fixed?

Both the desktop and browser versions of Teams handle the playback of GIF files in chat messages worse than any communications app I've ever used.

  • They are shown very small and can't be viewed larger.
  • If you want to see a larger view, you have to download the image.
  • If you right-click and select download while the GIF isn't playing, it downloads the non-animated JPG preview image instead! To download the actual GIF, you have to right-click & download while it's playing, turning the simple act of viewing a GIF into a frustrating minigame that no one asked to play.
  • If you do manage to download the GIF, the name of the downloaded file is simply "Pause GIF image.gif", even if the GIF you pasted in came from a named file.

Teams fumbles GIFs (small and low)

GIF playback in Teams has been in this sorry state for at least several months, possibly more than a year. This makes it painful for my team to share screen recording clips with each other, wasting everybody's time as they convert GIF files to MP4 just to make them usable in Teams.

When will this be fixed?

    Hi @Jacob Stamm

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your concerns.

After reviewing your issue, I completely understand the impact this has on your workflow. When a routine task such as previewing or downloading a GIF becomes cumbersome, it can significantly affect usability and overall productivity.

At present, Microsoft has not published an official timeline for addressing this behavior. Currently, animated GIFs in Microsoft Teams are displayed with limitations such as appearing in a small size, not being expandable like standard images, and sometimes being awkward to download correctly. Based on publicly available information, this appears to be the current product design rather than an issue caused by tenant configuration or something that can be adjusted by an admin.

Because there is no documented workaround or setting to improve this experience at this time, submitting feedback through the Microsoft Feedback Portal for Teams is especially important. Feedback submitted by customers plays a key role in helping product teams understand real-world impact. Reports that reflect broader demand or business impact are more likely to be prioritized for future improvements.

As a temporary workaround, if your team relies on GIFs for short recordings or demonstrations, you might consider using MP4 video files instead. Teams handles video playback more effectively, providing a smoother and more user-friendly experience compared to GIF previews.

I’m really sorry, I know this isn’t the outcome you were hoping for. As a forum moderator, the most I can do here is confirm the behavior and explain why it happens. Since this is a product‑side limitation, I’m not able to recover the transcript or intervene at the service level.

Thank you again for your understanding and patience. If you have any further questions or need assistance with anything else, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
