In word, notepad, and any other desktop app. Once I hit the Ctrl Key, I can no longer use my mouse to highlight. Though, I can still double click to highlight a word and triple click to highlight a section. I have check all of the normal mouse settings (Turn on Control Lock is not selected, etc.) and I have ensured that sticky keys, filter keys, and toggle keys are off as well. If I use the on-screen keyboard, the problem still occurs. How do I fix this issue? Thank you!

    Welcome Will,

I understand how frustrating it can be after pressing the Ctrl key, you can no longer click and drag to highlight text in Word, Notepad, and other desktop applications, although double-click and triple-click selection still work.

Before proceeding, could you please clarify:

    • Does the problem start immediately after pressing Ctrl once, or does it remain active until you restart Windows?
    • Does this behavior occur only with a physical keyboard, or does it also happen when you disconnect the keyboard completely and use only the mouse?

In the meantime, you can try these steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

Option 1: Check whether Windows is detecting a stuck Ctrl key

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
    • Select the Performance tab
    • Press both left Ctrl and right Ctrl keys several times
    • Test text selection again

Option 2: Restart the keyboard drivers

    • Open Device Manager from the Start menu
    • Expand Keyboards
    • Right-click the keyboard device and select Uninstall device
    • Restart the computer

Option 3: Perform a Clean Boot test

    • Press Windows + R > type msconfig and press Enter
    • On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services
    • Select Disable all
    • Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager
    • Disable all startup items and restart Windows
    • Test whether mouse highlighting works normally

Option 4: Run the System File Checker

    • Open Command prompt (admin) from the Start menu
    • Run:  sfc /scannow
    • After it completes, restart the computer and test again

I hope the steps above help you deal with your issue.
