Update Visual Studio 2026 stuck at 99% for 5 hours

I was running VS26 Community and got a popup that said it would install an update to 18.8.0, so I said postpone. I decided to do it and went to help and check for updates. I clicked on update now and it started. About 1 hour later it was at 99% and said it was finishing. I left it alone and checked back after 2 hours, and still at 99%. After 5 hours, I ended the task (Win11) and tried to open VS26, and it says the update is still running. I rebooted and VS26 says update is still running after the reboot. I went to Control Panel and I am now repairing the install, and it is at 500 out of 871. I use VS26 with the Fortran compiler, but I barely know how to build a solution since I'm an engineer and not much of a Fortran programmer.

Does the installer for the update require Admin privileges? I have to call our Help Desk to get them to supply the Admin Password, so I think that could be the problem, but it normally asks for the Admin Password early in the update.

After all this install mess, I likely will not install updates until forced. :)

Does the installer for the update require Admin privileges?

@Watson, George T According to Update Visual Studio "Since August 2023, an admin can let standard users run updates by configuring the AllowStandardUserControl policy. For details, see User Permissions and Visual Studio."

Hope you find this information helpful.
