I can't delete the "Just me" chat after migrating from Skype to Microsoft Teams. Every time I try to delete it, I get the error: "We couldn't delete your chat. Try again later."

I migrated my Skype account to Microsoft Teams. The "Just me" chat was migrated as well. I cannot delete this chat. Every attempt returns the error "We couldn't delete your chat. Try again later." I have already tried:

  • Teams desktop
  • Teams web
  • Signing out and back in
  • Clearing the Teams cache
  • Reinstalling Teams

None of these resolved the issue. Please remove the migrated "Just me" chat from my account or investigate this server-side issue.

Please note that this is a user-to-user community. As moderators, I have limited access to internal development details. My role is to direct users to the appropriate support channels and resources. While I cannot provide backend analysis, I will do my best to assist you within my responsibilities.

    Hi ThaoP

Please reply with these details only, without posting personal information:

    • Does the same error appear in the Teams mobile app?
    • Is the “Just me” chat hideable even if it is not deletable?
    • Did the chat come from signing in to Teams Free with Skype credentials?
    • Is this a personal Microsoft account, not a work or school Teams account?
    • What device and Teams app version are being used?

    Also try the steps below.

    1) Try deleting the chat from the Teams mobile app

    • Install or open Microsoft Teams Free on iOS or Android.
    • Sign in with the same Microsoft account or Skype credentials used during migration.
    • Go to Chat.
    • Find the “Just me” chat.
    • Tap and hold the chat.
    • Select Delete, then confirm.

    2) If Delete still fails, hide the chat instead

If the “Just me "chat cannot be deleted and keeps returning the same error, try hiding it so it no longer appears in the recent chat list.

    • In Teams Free, go to Chat.
    • On desktop or web, right-click the “Just me” chat or select More options.
    • Select Hide.
    • On mobile, tap and hold the chat, then select Hide chat.

    3) Export the Skype/Teams data before making further deletion attempts

Because this chat came from the Skype-to-Teams transition, export the data first if the chat contains anything important.

    • Go to the Teams Free export page
    • Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
    • Select Chat history, Media, or both.
    • Submit the request.
    • Return to the export page later and download the export when it becomes available.

See: Export or delete your data in Microsoft Teams Free | Microsoft Support

    4) Skype self-chat migration limitations

Skype users can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free using Skype credentials, and chats and contacts are transferred automatically. However, 1:1 chat with self-history will not be migrated to Teams Free. Since this concerns the “Just me” self-chat, it may not behave the same as a normal one-on-one chat.

Teams Free still supports starting a chat with yourself, but this does not necessarily mean migrated Skype self-chat history can be managed the same way as regular chats.

    5) Report the failed deletion to Microsoft Teams Free support

If Delete fails on desktop, web, and mobile with the same message, this should be reported through Microsoft Teams Free support because as forum moderators I cannot remove the chat from the account:

    • Open Microsoft Teams Free.
    • Select Settings and more or your profile picture.
    • Select Help or Give feedback, depending on the client.
    • Include this summary:  After Skype migration, the “Just me” chat cannot be deleted. Error: “We couldn’t delete your chat. Try again later.”
    • Mention that Teams desktop, Teams web, sign out/in, cache clearing, and reinstalling have already been tried.

Please tell me how it goes. If the problem persists, please don’t hesitate to reply to this thread and I will be happy to help. Have a lovely day!
