Microsoft Ads charged us for 150 clicks, only 4 reached our website

We recently decided to give Microsoft Ads another try after avoiding the platform for quite some time. We’ve had previous experiences where things didn’t feel particularly well controlled, but we wanted to give it a fair chance.

Unfortunately, this experience only reinforced our concerns.

Almost immediately we noticed that something felt wrong. Despite receiving a significant number of reported clicks, we saw virtually no product page visits, no meaningful engagement and no conversions.

That led us to investigate further.

We compared the reported Microsoft Ads clicks against:

  • Google Analytics 4
  • Attributed visits
  • All visits containing the msclkid parameter
  • Total website traffic
  • Traffic by country

Microsoft Ads reported 150 clicks, but only 4 visitors actually reached our website.

That means 98% of the billed clicks never resulted in a website visit.

This is not an attribution issue.

We run Google Ads and Meta Ads every day using the exact same website and tracking setup. Those platforms behave exactly as expected.

We also considered whether the traffic might simply have been attributed to another source. It wasn’t.

There is no corresponding increase in Direct traffic, Unassigned traffic, Organic traffic or any other channel that could account for the missing visitors.

The visitors simply never arrived and we submitted all of this documentation to Microsoft Advertising Support.

Unfortunately, the response we received was simply that Microsoft Ads and Google Analytics use different reporting methodologies and that Microsoft’s own reporting should be considered the authoritative source.

That completely misses the point, this is not about attribution, we saw zero increase in traffic.

It is about being charged for traffic that never reached the destination website.

At the time of writing, Microsoft has declined to credit the charges despite the documented discrepancy.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with Microsoft Ads, where the reported clicks cannot be reconciled with actual website traffic?

I’d be very interested to hear whether this is an isolated incident or something others have seen as well.

    Hi SteveSan,

Thank you for using our Microsoft Advertising Learn Q&A Platform!

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed account of your experience. I can completely understand why you would be concerned if Microsoft Advertising reported 150 clicks while your own analysis showed only 4 visitors reaching your website. Any advertiser would want to understand where that discrepancy comes from, especially when there are associated advertising costs.

Based on the information you've provided, it sounds like you've already done extensive validation by comparing Microsoft Advertising click data against GA4, attributed visits, MSCLKID values, total site traffic, and traffic by country. Given that due diligence, it's understandable that a generic explanation about attribution differences may not fully address your concerns.

In Microsoft Advertising a recorded ad click and a recorded website visit are not necessarily the same event. A click is counted when a user selects an ad, while analytics platforms can only record a visit if the landing page successfully loads and the necessary tracking scripts execute. Various factors can prevent a website session from being recorded even after a click occurs.

Microsoft actively monitors click quality and classifies traffic as standard-quality, low-quality, or invalid clicks. Invalid or low-quality clicks can originate from automated systems, spiders, test servers, accidental activity, or other sources that are unlikely to generate business value. We always recommend reviewing click-quality related metrics and traffic source reports when investigating unexpected traffic patterns.

That said, a discrepancy of this size would understandably raise questions and merits careful review. If you have evidence from server logs, MSCLKID tracking, or other sources showing that only a small number of requests actually reached your website, I would encourage continuing to work with Support and providing that evidence as part of a click-quality investigation. If a review determines that certain clicks are invalid, Microsoft Advertising may provide credits for those clicks in accordance with its policies.

I hope the information provided helps clarify your concerns and points you in the right direction. If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team.

I've also sent you a private message requesting some additional information. Whenever you have a chance, please feel free to reply, and we'll be happy to continue assisting you.

    Kind regards,
