Microsoft discontinued media information for Legacy Windows Media Player in December 2025.

Windows Media Player’s ‘find album information’ functionality has been removed ...

Windows Media Player just lost one of its oldest features

There's a reason why Microsoft now calls it "Legacy" Windows Media Player: the app is being retired.

Microsoft hasn't (to my knowledge) announced its reason for removing access to media information. However, with the declining user base for optical media and home music libraries, it wouldn't make sense to continue paying licensing fees to media information providers.

This is currently a widely reported problem, this seems to be either caused by a Windows update or a problem contacting the MusicMatch servers Microsoft use the get the album data, there is no reported fix for this yet, the best option is to open the Feedback Hub app and provide feedback to the Windows developers there, if more people report the problem, they will provide a patch to resolve the problem.

    Turn on Internet media-information retrieval

    1. Open Windows Media Player Legacy.
    2. Press Ctrl + M if you don't see the traditional menu bar.
    3. Click Tools → Options.
    4. Open the Privacy tab.
    5. Look for: “Update music files by retrieving media info from the Internet”
    6. Tick/check that box.
    7. Also make sure the other Internet-related options on that page aren't disabled.
    8. Click Apply → OK.
    9. Close Windows Media Player completely and open it again.
