If Excel shows that it needs repair, the supported fix is to repair the Office installation.
- Close Excel and all other Office apps.
- Open the repair tool:
- Windows 11: Right-click Start > Installed apps.
- Windows 10: Right-click Start > Apps and Features.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office in the app list.
- Select it, then choose Modify.
- Choose a repair option:
- Quick Repair first for a faster fix.
- If Excel still does not open, run Online Repair. This is more complete and reinstalls Office components.
- Follow the on-screen steps.
- Restart the PC after the repair finishes.
If double-clicking Excel files opens a blank screen, use Online Repair directly.
If Excel opens but a specific workbook does not, try opening the file from inside Excel with File > Open > Browse, select the file, then use the arrow next to Open and choose Open and Repair.
If the problem is with files opening in the wrong Office app, run Quick Repair first. If that does not help, manually set the correct default app for the file type in Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs.
If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall the versions that are not needed and restart the computer, because multiple versions can cause file-opening problems.
