Windows 11 Pro Retail/Digital License not activating after ASUS authorized motherboard replacement

My ASUS V241 All-in-One originally had a genuine and activated Windows 10 installation when I purchased and started using the computer. I later upgraded it through Microsoft's official Windows Update/upgrade process to Windows 11 Pro. Windows remained activated for years, including after normal Windows updates and reinstalls.

Recently, the motherboard failed and was replaced by an ASUS authorized service center. After the motherboard replacement, Windows 11 Pro no longer activates.

I would like to clarify the licensing information I have now obtained:

  • I contacted ASUS support again after initially posting this question.

ASUS checked the original factory configuration of my device using its serial number. ASUS explicitly confirmed that this computer did not leave the factory with an embedded OEM Windows license. ASUS also confirmed that this information is recorded in their support system. Therefore, I now understand that this is not an OEM/OA3 license issue related to the replacement motherboard.

I also have a Windows system image/backup from before the motherboard replacement, when Windows was successfully activated. Information recovered from that old Windows installation shows:

Windows licensing status: LICENSED ProductKeyType: Retail

The old installation also contains the generic Windows Pro key VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T, but I understand that this is a generic installation key and not my unique activation key.

As a test, I entered this generic Windows Pro key in Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. Windows accepted the key, but activation failed with:

Error code: 0x803FA067

“We can’t activate Windows on this device because you don’t have a valid digital license or product key.”

The important point is that this same computer had a genuine, activated Windows installation before the ASUS-authorized motherboard replacement. Windows 10 was later upgraded officially to Windows 11 Pro and remained activated until the motherboard was changed.

I am signed into my Microsoft account, but the activation system is currently unable to associate the previous license with the replacement motherboard.

Could someone please advise how I can recover/re-associate the previous Retail/Digital License with this computer after an authorized motherboard replacement?

In particular:

Is there a way for Microsoft to locate the previous digital license using my Microsoft account or the activation history of the old hardware? Since the old Windows installation reports ProductKeyType = Retail and LICENSED, is there any additional licensing information that I can extract from the old system image that would help Microsoft identify or recover the license? If this requires manual license verification or reassociation by Microsoft, how can I reach the appropriate activation/licensing support team?

I can provide the ASUS device serial number, motherboard replacement/service information, Microsoft account information, and other identifying information privately if required. I have not posted those details publicly for privacy reasons. My ASUS V241 All-in-One originally had a genuine and activated Windows 10 installation when I purchased and started using the computer. Thank you for your reply. I purchased the ASUS V241EP in March 2023. Windows 10 was already installed on the computer when I bought it, and it was a genuine Windows installation.

To clarify, I have never purchased a separate Windows licence or product key for this computer. The Windows 10 licence I used was the one that came with the computer when I purchased it.

I simply don't remember whether, during the first Windows setup, I had to click an “Activate” button or whether Windows activated automatically. But I definitely did not buy or enter a separate product key.

Later, Windows itself offered the official upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, which I accepted. Windows remained activated after the upgrade.

Over the years I also reinstalled Windows several times using my recovery USB, and it always activated again without me entering or purchasing another product key.

Therefore, this was not a Windows 7/8 upgrade. I bought the computer in March 2023 with genuine Windows 10 already installed.

What is confusing is that ASUS support checked the original factory configuration using the device serial number and confirmed that, according to their records, the device did not leave the factory with an OEM Windows licence.

I still have a system image from before the motherboard replacement, when Windows was activated. The licensing information recovered from that installation shows LICENSED and ProductKeyType: Retail.

If there is anything else I can check or extract from that old activated system image to determine the origin of the licence or help identify the previous digital licence, please let me know.
