Hi everyone,

I have a personal (BYOD) HP laptop that originally came with Windows 11 Home.

Our company IT team previously changed the Windows edition to Windows 11 Enterprise Evaluation for work purposes. However, since this is a personal/BYOD device, the Enterprise setup did not work as expected with our company's applications.

Our IT team has now instructed us to change the device to Windows 11 Pro.

I'm a little confused about the correct process and licensing requirements.

My questions are:

  1. Since my laptop originally came with Windows 11 Home, can I purchase the Windows 11 Pro upgrade from the Microsoft Store and use that license?
  2. Since the laptop is currently running Windows 11 Enterprise Evaluation, can I upgrade/downgrade directly from Enterprise Evaluation to Pro, or would I need to reinstall Windows?
  3. If a clean installation is required, will I need to install Windows 11 Home first and then upgrade to Pro?
  4. Is there another legitimate and more appropriate way to obtain Windows 11 Pro for a BYOD device?
  5. Do I need to purchase a full Windows 11 Pro license, or is the Microsoft Store Pro upgrade sufficient for this situation?

I want to make sure I purchase the correct license and follow the proper installation process before making any changes to the laptop.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

It is not possible to downgrade Enterprise to Pro or Home, so new installation is required. You may reset your PC to a factory state instead of reinstallation, see PC manual.

If you have a separate Pro license, you may reinstall Pro. Otherwise it is needed to install Home and upgrade it to Pro thru Store.
