How to get a 2019 Surface mouse to work with a new 2026 Surface Pro

First off, has Microsoft made it so that their old Surface mouses won't work with new Surfaces (and so you have to buy a new mouse from them)?
If not.... how then do I get that old (bluetooth) mouse to pair with the new Surface Pro?

No, Microsoft has not made older Surface Bluetooth mice incompatible with newer Surface Pro models.

A 2019 Surface Bluetooth mouse should work with a 2026 Surface Pro.

Make sure the mouse has working/fresh batteries.

On the mouse, press and hold the pairing/Bluetooth button for about 3–5 seconds until the LED flashes.

On the Surface Pro:

Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth

Select the mouse when it appears and connect it.

If it doesn't appear:

Turn Bluetooth off/on on the Surface.

Restart the Surface.

Disconnect the mouse from the old computer.

Remove any previous mouse entry and pair again.

Make sure the mouse's LED is actually flashing.

You do not need to buy a new Microsoft mouse just because you have a 2026 Surface Pro. The old Bluetooth mouse should work unless there is a problem with the mouse, batteries, or Bluetooth pairing.

Microsoft has not documented that older Surface Bluetooth mice are blocked from pairing with newer Surface devices. Surface Mouse and Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse are supported on PCs running Windows 10 or Windows 11 with Bluetooth 4.0 or later, which includes a new Surface Pro.

To pair the older Bluetooth Surface mouse with the new Surface Pro:

    1. Turn on the mouse.
    2. Press and hold the pairing button on the bottom of the mouse until the LED starts flashing.
      • Surface Mouse: about 3 seconds.
      • In general Surface mouse troubleshooting guidance: 5–7 seconds until the light blinks.
    3. On the Surface Pro, open Bluetooth settings:
      • Windows 11: Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth
    4. Select the mouse from the list, such as Surface Mouse, then select Done.
    5. When pairing completes, the LED stops flashing.

If it does not pair, use these checks:

    1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
    2. Check that the mouse has power.
      • If the pairing light does not come on, check or replace the batteries.
    3. If the pairing light flashes three times and then turns off, the mouse is already paired to another PC within range. Remove it from that other PC first, then pair it again to the new Surface Pro.
    4. Turn airplane mode on for 10–15 seconds, then turn it off.
    5. Turn off other Bluetooth devices connected to the Surface Pro, because too many Bluetooth devices can interfere with the connection.
    6. Remove the mouse from the Bluetooth devices list on the Surface Pro and pair it again.
    7. Test the mouse with another PC. If it works there, the issue is likely with the Surface Pro Bluetooth setup rather than the mouse.
