    Hi WING,

Sorry you're running into this issue.

Just to clarify, have you ever set up Microsoft Authenticator for this organization's account before, or is this your first time signing in?

If your organization requires Microsoft Authenticator for MFA, the sign-in process may not offer other verification methods unless they've been configured by the organization's IT team.

Because you're using a work account, the MFA settings are managed by your organization's IT administrator. Unfortunately, this isn't something that can be reset from the user side.

I'd recommend reaching out to your organization's IT administrator and explaining that you're unable to sign in because you're stuck between Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft Authenticator app and are no longer receiving authentication prompts or codes.

You can specifically ask whether they can

    • Reset your MFA settings
    • Require MFA re-registration
    • Remove your existing Authenticator registration so you can set it up again

You may also want to share the following Microsoft article with them: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID | …

If you are unsure who your IT administrator is, you can refer to this official Microsoft guide for assistance: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support    User's image

Once your IT administrator resets your MFA registration, you should be able to sign in again and go through the Microsoft Authenticator setup process from the beginning, including scanning a new QR code on your device.

I hope this points you in the right direction. If you receive any updates from your IT team or run into any issues along the way, feel free to reply back with more details and I'll be happy to help further.

    Best regards,

Try these steps in this order on your iPhone:

    1. Update everything first

    • Open App Store → Microsoft Authenticator → Update

Also update Teams, Outlook, and Microsoft Company Portal if installed.

Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install any available iOS update.

Microsoft specifically recommends using the latest Authenticator version and keeping the device/security apps updated. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/authenticator/troubleshoot-problems-with-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Troubleshoot problems with Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

    2. Check iPhone date/time

    Go to:

    Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically → ON

An incorrect device clock can cause Authenticator authentication problems. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/authenticator/troubleshoot-problems-with-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Troubleshoot problems with Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

    3. Check Authenticator notifications

    Go to:

    Settings → Notifications → Authenticator

    Allow Notifications → ON

    Lock Screen → ON

    Banners → ON

    Sounds → ON

Also make sure Focus / Do Not Disturb isn't blocking the notification. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/authenticator/troubleshoot-problems-with-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Troubleshoot problems with Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

    4. Change your network

    Try:

    Wi-Fi → Mobile Data

    or Mobile Data → Wi-Fi

If you're using a VPN, turn it off temporarily. Microsoft specifically recommends testing another network and disconnecting VPNs when troubleshooting Authenticator. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/authenticator/troubleshoot-problems-with-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Troubleshoot problems with Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

    5. Open Authenticator directly

    Don't start from Teams.

Open Microsoft Authenticator → find your college/work account.

If the account tile says something like:

    Action required

    Sign in to restore

    Inactive

    Credential unavailable

tap the account and complete the sign-in/recovery process.

For work/school accounts, restoring Authenticator generally restores the account name, but you may have to authenticate again. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/authenticator/restore-account-credentials-from-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Restore account credentials from Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

    6. Try signing in through the browser

On Safari, try your organization's Microsoft sign-in page and sign in with your college/work Microsoft account.

When Microsoft asks for verification, choose:

    Other ways to sign in

    If available, try:

    Authenticator

    SMS

    Phone call

    Security code

Microsoft supports using another verification method when Authenticator isn't working. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/authenticator/sign-in-using-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Sign in using Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

    . Don't delete Authenticator yet

    This is important.

Do NOT immediately uninstall Authenticator or remove your college account from it.

If Authenticator is your only MFA method, deleting the registration can leave you unable to sign back in. Microsoft notes that work/school accounts may need to be registered again after restoration. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/authenticator/restore-account-credentials-from-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Restore account credentials from Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

    7. If it still says “The credential is invalid”

At this point, because multiple Microsoft apps are failing, your college/company Microsoft administrator probably needs to check your Microsoft Entra ID sign-in logs and authentication registration.

    Give them:

    Error: The credential is invalid

    Code: -50004

    Tag: 488do

    Timestamp: 2026-08-22 18:06:18 UTC

Correlation ID: the one shown on your screen

Microsoft's Entra troubleshooting documentation specifically uses the sign-in logs, failure reason, additional details, and correlation information to diagnose authentication failures. ([Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/identity/monitoring-health/howto-troubleshoot-sign-in-errors?utm_source=chatgpt.com"How to troubleshoot sign-in errors - Microsoft Entra ID | Microsoft Learn"))

Ask the administrator to check whether your Authenticator/MFA registration or device registration needs to be reset/re-registered.

Also, inside Authenticator, Microsoft recommends using Send Feedback to submit diagnostic logs if the problem persists. ([Microsoft Support](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/authenticator/troubleshoot-problems-with-microsoft-authenticator?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Troubleshoot problems with Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft Support"))

Most important: If this is your college Microsoft account, don't waste time reinstalling Teams and Outlook repeatedly. If Authenticator itself can't validate the credential, reinstalling Teams/Outlook won't fix the underlying authentication problem. The admin may need to reset your MFA registration.Yes. Since Teams, Outlook, and other Microsoft apps are all failing, while Authenticator is also throwing errors, this is more likely an account/Authenticator registration or Microsoft Entra authentication issue than a Teams/Outlook app problem. The key error is “The credential is invalid” (-50004).
