Forgotten PIN and PW - How to Access Surface Laptop Studio?

I am locked out of my Surface Laptop Studio because it wanted my pin and I cannot remember it.  When I click "forgot my pin" it gives me an error message.  I obviously cannot remember my password either, because it does not let me in that way.  However, it also does not permit me to try to change my password.  How can I access my Surface? It was doing face recognition before that. I am beyond frustrated.

I did also try to do a hard reset through the "hold the volume button and do a dance and say a prayer" but it also gave me an error message. There isn't a human I can get on the phone to work with me and I don't even know what tech to ask.

    Hi Rocky Pilgrim,

We appreciate your post on Microsoft Community.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having difficulty accessing your Surface Laptop Studio. If you’ve forgotten your PIN and password, you can attempt to reset your device to its original settings. However, please be aware that this will delete all data on your device, so make sure you have a backup of your important files before proceeding.

To reset your Surface Laptop Studio to factory settings, follow these steps:

    1. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
    2. Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.
    3. Wait for your device to restart and display the Surface logo.
    4. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    5. Choose whether you want to keep or remove your personal files, and then follow the on-screen instructions to reset your device.

You can also check this link. Restore or reset Surface for Windows - Microsoft Support

If the above steps do not work, you can try performing a factory reset. Here are the steps to follow:

    1. Press the Windows key + L from the login screen.
    2. Hold the Shift key and press the Power icon in the bottom-right corner.
    3. Select Restart.
    4. After your Surface restarts, you’ll see a blue screen with various options. This is known as the Recovery Environment.
    5. Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC>
    6. The reset process will take few minutes make sure the charger also connected to the device.

If it persists, we will be going to download and install the driver pack on your Surface device. The recovery image is a fresh Windows installation specific on your Surface.

To Download USB Recovery Image - http://aka.ms/sri

    REQUIREMENTS:

To ensure compatibility with your Surface device, it is recommended to use a USB flash drive with a minimum storage capacity of 16 GB to 32 GB and format it to FAT32. If the storage capacity exceeds 32 GB, it is not possible to format it to FAT32 as only XFAT and NTFS options are available. Please note that if a USB flash drive is formatted to XFAT or NTFS, it will not be detected on your Surface device.

NOTE: Creating a recovery drive will erase all existing files that are stored on the SSD drive. Make sure to transfer any important data on your USB flash drive to another storage device before you proceed.

Once the download is complete, create a folder on your desktop and rename it to ‘recovery’. Extract the recovery image to the folder you created on your desktop. After the extraction is complete, select all the files in the folder and copy and paste them directly to your USB flash drive. Do not copy the folder directly to the USB. Once the copying is done, remove the USB and connect it to your Surface.

When you are ready, please click this link Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface - Microsoft Support to follow the step on how to use the recovery image.

Please let me know how it goes and hopefully it helps.

    Kind regards,

    Christopher.

What is supposed to happen when I hold the windows key and L? Because nothing happens except it reminds me that my pin is required but it is locked for 2 hours because i've tried too many times.

Am I supposed to hold the windows key, L, AND the shift key when restarting? I tried that, I tried just the shift key and restarting, and they all lead me back to the original login screen - there is no blue screen with options.

is there another way to access back to a factory reset? i'm not worried about saving files.

I can access my Microsoft account on my desktop. But those credentials do not permit me to log into my Surface. I can even see the Surface as part of "my devices." But I cannot do anything but disable it (as if it were stolen). Then it says I need to speak to an administrator about accessing it after that, but I am techinically the administrator and any assistance I try to get online loops me back to my login for GoDaddy and there is no option for accessing the Surface or my Microsoft account (just email and website).

    Hi Rocky Pilgrim,

Thank you for your response. I’m sorry to hear that you’re still having trouble resetting your password or pin. If you’re unable to reset your password or pin using the instructions I provided, you can try resetting your Microsoft account password by following these steps:

    1. Go to Microsoft account password reset page and select Forgot password?
    2. Enter the email address or phone number associated with your Microsoft account and select Next.
    3. Follow the instructions to verify your identity. You may be asked to enter a verification code sent to your email or phone number.
    4. Once you’ve verified your identity, you’ll be able to reset your password.
    5. If you can login successfully online and only in the device, you cannot login and your account is okay online. The next steps are to reset the Surface device using the recovery image.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Kind regards,

    Christopher.

Thank you for the detailed response. When I try to do a hard reset following those instructions, I get an error message and it says retry or exit. When I retry, I get the same error message. I will try to create a recovery drive, but why can't I reset the password or the pin through my microsoft account? It sees my device, I just can't speak to it.
