Azure for Students credits not being used for Foundry

I deployed an instance of GPT 5.6 Luna through Foundry, which is marked as a 'Direct from Azure' product, meaning it should qualify for credits, however instead of the $100 Azure for Students credit being used, my credit card is being charged. I cannot find any information explaining how this should work or how to fix it in the terms or the internet. Am I doing something wrong or is this how it's supposed to work?

    Hi Mar,

Thank you for your question regarding Azure for Students credits and the Foundry deployment.

Understanding Azure for Students Credits and Marketplace Products

Azure for Students credits are generally applicable to most Azure services, but there are some important exceptions, especially when it comes to third-party or marketplace products.

Why Your Credit Card Is Being Charged

    • Marketplace and Third-Party Products: Some products available through Azure Marketplace (including Foundry offerings) may not be eligible for payment using Azure for Students credits, even if they are labeled "Direct from Azure." These products sometimes require a separate billing mechanism, which can result in charges to your credit card.
    • Eligibility Restrictions: The $100 Azure for Students credit typically applies to first-party Microsoft Azure services. Marketplace items, especially those with their own licensing or billing agreements, may bypass the credit and bill you directly.

    What You Can Do

    1. Check Product Eligibility:
      • Review the Azure for Students Offer Terms for a list of eligible and ineligible services.
      • Look for any notes in the Foundry product listing regarding credit applicability.
    2. Review Billing Details:
      • Go to the Azure Portal, navigate to "Cost Management + Billing," and review the invoice details to confirm which resources are being billed to your credit card versus credits.
    3. Contact Support:
      • If you believe the charge is an error or want clarification on a specific product, contact Azure Support for a case review.

Hello @Mar , I hope you are doing well,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

If the model is shown in Microsoft Foundry as “Direct from Azure”, it is sold and billed directly by Azure, and Foundry documentation indicates these models are eligible for Azure sponsorship credits

    .

Azure for Students provides $100 in Azure credit, and eligible Azure usage is deducted from that balance.

    I recommend checking the following:

Open the Azure Sponsorships portal and confirm that your $100 credit is still available.

Check Usage and verify whether the Foundry deployment appears as Azure consumption.

In Cost Management, check the exact meter/charge associated with the GPT-5.6 Luna deployment.

    1. If the model is definitely Direct from Azure but the usage is being charged to your payment method instead of consuming the student credit, this would need to be reviewed by Microsoft Billing/Foundry support.

Also, make sure the subscription is actually Azure for Students and not a Pay-As-You-Go subscription linked to the same account.
