Cannot login to Google account in Edge?

Hi everyone,

I am having trouble signing in to my Google account in Edge. I use a Yubikey to login. The login fails without Edge even opening the security key dialog. I have no idea why it is doing this. I can confirm it works in Firefox and Vivaldi.

I get the following in Edge when trying to log in.

Can't Login

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Microsoft Edge | Other | Windows 11

    Hi Brett Williams

Thanks for the update. Since the issue occurs in InPrivate mode, the YubiKey works in Firefox and Vivaldi, and Edge never displays the security key prompt, this appears less likely to be caused by extensions or cached data.

A useful next step would be to test the YubiKey on another WebAuthn/FIDO2 site (for example, Yubico's demo site) in Edge. If Edge also fails to prompt there, that would help determine whether the issue is with Edge's WebAuthn handling rather than Google's sign-in process.

Did this start after updating to Edge 151.0.4129.78 or Windows 11 build 26200.8875?

    Hi everyone,

    Thanks for sharing your experiences!

If you guys can share your Edge version, Windows version, and whether the issue started recently, that may help identify a common factor. It would be great if everyone could submit feedback through Edge > Help and feedback > Send feedback and include diagnostic data where possible.

So that the corresponding team can have a look.

I also had the same issue - started happening a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't find a solution so had to switch to Chrome for anything that needs a Google login. I tried all the work arounds above to no success.

    Hi Brett Williams

Since the YubiKey works in Firefox and Vivaldi, that suggests the security key itself is functioning correctly. I'd also test whether the issue occurs in an Edge InPrivate window with all extensions disabled. If Edge never displays the WebAuthn/security key prompt and Google immediately returns an error, that may point to an Edge profile issue, an extension interfering with authentication, or a problem with Edge's handling of WebAuthn requests.

It would also be helpful to know the Edge version (edge://settings/help), Windows version, and whether other security-key sign-ins work in Edge.

A documented workaround exists for a similar Microsoft sign-in issue with security keys in Outlook: use another 2-step verification method instead of the security key.

For Microsoft Edge sign-in troubleshooting, the supported checks are:

    1. Clear cached credentials and cookies in Edge:
      1. Go to edge://settings/privacy.
      2. Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
      3. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
      4. Set the time range to All time.
      5. Select Clear now.
      6. Restart Edge and try the Google sign-in again.
    2. Check for conflicting profiles or stored credentials:
      1. Go to edge://settings/profiles.
      2. If multiple profiles are present, sign out of the profile with the issue and sign in again.
      3. If the issue continues, remove the problematic profile and create a new one.
      4. On Windows, open Credential Manager and remove outdated entries related to saved sign-in credentials, then restart Edge.
    3. Update Edge:
      1. Go to edge://settings/help.
      2. Let Edge install the latest version.
      3. Restart the browser.
    4. Check network and proxy behavior:
      1. Go to edge://settings/system.
      2. Verify proxy settings are not interfering.
      3. Test from a different network, such as a mobile hotspot, to see whether the failure is network-specific.
    5. If the problem is specific to a security key flow, try another verification method temporarily to confirm whether the failure is limited to the security key path.

Caution: removing an Edge profile deletes local browsing data for that profile, including favorites, history, and passwords that are not synced.
