    Hi, Cheryl Calabro

This usually depends on whether the sign-in is a personal Microsoft account or a Microsoft 365 work/school account. The My Info page for an organization normally does not let standard users create their own mailbox aliases.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

If this is a work or school account, ask the Microsoft 365 administrator to add the alias under Users > Active users > select your account > Manage username and email. The option may be unavailable if the account has no Exchange license, the requested domain has not been added to the organization, or the address is already assigned to another user. See the administrator instructions.

If the organization synchronizes accounts from a local Active Directory, the administrator must add the alias there instead. Cloud-side changes will be blocked and overwritten during synchronization.

For a personal account, try again in an InPrivate or Incognito browser window after signing out of every Microsoft account. This helps avoid opening the wrong personal or work account.

If the email was recently removed or changed, avoid repeatedly submitting it. Wait and retry later, then use Microsoft account support if the same exact error continues.

If My Info does not allow adding an alias, use the Microsoft account alias management page directly:

    1. Sign in to Edit account info at https://account.live.com/names/manage.
    2. Select Add email.
    3. Add either:
      • a new Outlook.com email address as an alias, or
      • an existing non-Microsoft email address that is not already tied to another Microsoft account.

Common reasons adding an alias fails:

    • The email address is already associated with another Microsoft account.
    • Existing @hotmail.com, @live.com, @outlook.com, or @msn.com addresses cannot be added as aliases to another Microsoft account.
    • A work or school email address may be blocked by organizational restrictions.
    • Aliases cannot be used to share information between two Microsoft accounts.

If the issue is that the current primary alias is causing account problems, add another alias and then set it as primary:

    1. Go to Your info.
    2. Select Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
    3. Select Make primary next to the alias.

If sign-in or account changes are blocked, use the guided support or sign-in helper tools available from the Microsoft account support page.
