    Hi, Leanne Grinter

Error 0x800CCC0E means Outlook cannot establish an IMAP connection to Telstra’s mail server. Since this is a BigPond account, the Gmail/Yahoo workaround does not apply.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

First, sign in to Telstra Webmail using the same email address and password. If the password is rejected or webmail does not load messages, reset the password or contact Telstra before changing Outlook.

In classic Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select the BigPond account, then verify these settings:

    Incoming server: imap.telstra.com

    Port: 993

    Encryption: SSL/TLS

    Outgoing server: smtp.telstra.com

Port: 465 with SSL/TLS, or 587 with STARTTLS

Username: the complete BigPond email address

Enable My outgoing server requires authentication

These are Telstra’s current settings for both Telstra Mail and BigPond accounts.

If Telstra uses two-step verification, generate an app-specific password in the Telstra account settings and enter that password in Outlook instead of the regular password.

If the settings are correct, create a fresh Outlook profile through Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Add, then add the account again. This replaces damaged connection settings without altering the mailbox stored on Telstra’s server.

If this is a Gmail or Yahoo account in classic Outlook, this is a known issue that caused Outlook to stop syncing and repeatedly prompt for sign-in. Microsoft marked it fixed on 3/20/26, but after a password change the old OAuth token can still block sign-in until it expires, which usually takes about one hour.

To force Outlook to prompt for sign-in again:

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Open Credential Manager from the Windows Start menu.
    3. Select Manage your credentials > Windows Credentials.
    4. Under Generic credentials, find entries that start with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
    5. Expand them and identify the ones that include tp_google_imap_Oauth2 or tp_yahoo_imap_Oauth2.
    6. Remove each matching MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 credential for the affected account. There can be two or four entries per account.
    7. Restart Outlook and sign in to the account.
    8. Restart Outlook again if syncing does not resume immediately.

If that does not fix it, a second workaround is to remove the account identity key from the registry so Outlook prompts for sign-in again.

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Right-click Start > Run, type Regedit, then select OK.
    3. Go to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities
    4. Under Identities, select each subkey until the affected email address is found.
    5. Delete only the identity key for that affected account.
    6. Restart Outlook and sign in again.

Deleting registry keys is a higher-risk step. Remove only the matching identity key for the affected account.

The general Outlook send/receive article also lists 0x800ccc0e as a supported Outlook error code.
