    Hello james jensen,

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. It seems that Word has suddenly entered reduced-functionality mode and is asking you to activate Microsoft 365, even though you own a one-time-purchase Office 2021 license.

To narrow this down, could you please confirm:

    1. Are you using Windows or macOS?
    2. If you use a Mac, was Word installed from the Apple Store or downloaded directly from your Microsoft account?
    3. Does Office 2021 appear under Services & subscriptions in the Microsoft account used to purchase or activate it?

If you are using a Mac, you can try using the official Mac License Removal Tool, then restart your Mac and attempt to activate Office again. This method may help if the activation information has become stuck or corrupted.

Note: The license removal tool only clears saved activation/licensing data on your Mac, it does not delete your purchase or invalidate your license. However, please make sure you still have access to the correct Microsoft account associated with your original Office purchase, as you will need to sign in again to reactivate it after running the tool.

I look forward to your response so we could look into this issue further!

This usually means the installed Office apps and the license being used to activate them no longer match, or Office has become deactivated.

    Try this in order:

    1. Sign in with the account that owns Office 2021
Open Word or Excel. If prompted to activate, sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Office 2021. If the Activation wizard appears, follow the prompts.
    2. Check whether the license is on the account
Go to the Services & subscriptions page and verify that Office is listed there. If it is, install Office from that account if needed.
    3. Check whether Office was deactivated or signed out
If the app shows Product deactivated, select Sign in and enter the account tied to the Office license.
    4. Check for multiple Office installs
Multiple copies of Office can cause activation conflicts and lead to Unlicensed Product behavior.
    5. If Office was recently reinstalled or updated, reinstall from the account that owns the license
If the wrong edition was installed, activation can fail. Reinstalling from the Microsoft account that owns Office 2021 is the supported path.
    6. Run the activation troubleshooter on Windows
The Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter can help identify and fix activation issues on the same Windows PC where Office is installed. It requires Windows 10 or later.

If the apps are showing Unlicensed Product or asking for Microsoft 365 even though Office 2021 was purchased, the most likely cause is that Office is signed in with the wrong account, there are multiple Office copies installed, or the installed Office edition does not match the Office 2021 license.
